Buttons can be used not only for fastening but also for creating nice designs on the wrapping paper.They can be attached directly to the wrapping paper 
or on a scrap paper which is then glued to the wrapping paper.

hmmm...how is this earth friendly? the buttons are pretty much wasted as i can't imagine too many people would un-glue them , clean them up and then reuse them?! i llike some of the other ideas but this one seems wasteful :(
